West Sussex Arts and Crafts house

This Grade II listed country house in West Sussex has far-reaching views towards the South Downs

Clock House is a listed country property built in the Arts & Crafts style and completed just before the outbreak of the First World War although it appears older, because it incorporates a 16th century clock house. Requisitioned in WW2, a fire gutted the second floor but the house was then rebuilt in 1951.

A huge variety of architectural and period features include fine oak panelling and carvings, recessed fireplaces and stone fire surrounds in most bedrooms, as well as stained glass motifs and original tiling.

The family rooms are accessed from the grand entrance hall, while the great hall, drawing room and dining room provide uninterrupted views to the South Downs and onto the formal terrace and lawns below.

Other useful rooms include a superb family kitchen, a walk-in larder, a butler’s pantry, staff sitting room (now playroom) and a former estate manager’s office (now study/library). There are eight well-proportioned bedrooms, various bathrooms and a laundry room upstairs are all linked by the grand staircase, secondary staircase, landings and a corridor with raised leaded windows all along.

Below ground the basement has wonderful storage and plenty of scope for leisure use. OUtside the grounds come to just under eight acres, and have lawns, mature trees, hedging, a bio-dynamic garden and an orchard. A paddock of an acre also lies on the eastern side.
