Over the last 18 monthsproperty prices have accelerated dramatically in Winchester, says Michael Dunning of Lane Fox. According to recent figures (Source: ‘upmystreet.co.uk’, August 2000), the national average of a detached property is ?155,896, whereasin Winchester the average is ?240,174.
The national average for a semi-detached house is ?89,395; in Winchester, the average is ?151,278.
Many well-to-do Londoners, especially those with young families, are selling their primary home in the capital and buying good family houses in Winchester.
These properties are larger, have much bigger gardens, cost approximately half as much as their London house, and provide buyers with a considerably better quality of life.
Commuters can take advantage of Winchester’s generallygood rail and road connectionsto travel to London daily, although more and more are choosing to work from home at least one day a week.
An annual rail season ticket from Winchester to London-Waterloo currently costs ?2,936.00.
