The South Downs
A pleasant and direct way to reach the South Downs is to go tothe Saxon town of Lewes, which is picturesquely set on a spur where the River Ouse meanders through the Downs. Ask for directions at the Tourist Information Centre, orfollow signs to the golf course, only half an hour’s walk from the centre of town, which lies on the edge of the Downs on a steep incline.
The crossing ofa single field beyond the golf course will take you tothe heart of the Downs.
For those with only a few hours to spare,the remains of an iron age fortlie on the pinnacle of Mount Caburn, which can be visited in an afternoon.
If you like a longer trek you can explorethe South Downs Way, a long distance bridleway from Petersfield in Hampshire to Beachy Head at Eastbourne, or head 8 miles north to Ashdown Forest – stomping ground of Pooh Bear and AA Milne, his creator.
