Alitex Series Video: How to pot bulbs for spring

In the fourth of our how-to videos sponsored by Alitex, makers of bespoke greenhouses and conservatories, we show you how to pot bulbs in preparation for spring.

John Wood, Head Gardener at Hinton Ampner in Hampshire, shows us how to pot bulbs for spring.

A good job for a rainy winter’s day, John layers narcissus and hyacinth bulbs in a shared pot. After the bulbs are potted, he advises placing them in a cool, dark place (2 – 8 degrees) for around 8 weeks to allow the roots to develop. After this, bring the pot out and the bulbs will flower.

This technique guarantees early flowers next year, bringing spring into the greenhouse early, brightening up those dull days in February.
