Why Roedean?

Why Roedean?

At Roedean, girls have the space to grow up at their own pace and realise their full potential, and all in the stunning surroundings between the sea and the South Downs national Park. It has girls from over 38 countries, and is easily accessible from London and the South, and Gatwick airport is 30 minutes away.

As an academic school, we seek to inspire curiosity and a love of learning in all our girls. The school was judged by ISI to be excellent in every area, highlighting its remarkable strengths, and we are firmly established as the most popular senior school for girls in Sussex.

Roedean has a unique cliff top, coastal location sitting snugly on the edge of the South Downs, a few minutes from the bustle of Brighton and with a private secret tunnel down to the beach. Roedean is a warm, lively home for 650 girls living in world-class day and boarding houses. On-site facilities include a brand new full-size hockey pitch, recently refurbished tennis and netball courts, gym, professional 320-seat theatre, dance studios, swimming pool, hockey, cricket and football pitches, golf course, a farm and acres of grounds.

Roedean - lifestyle

Our Sports and Co-curricular at Roedean

Roedean is becoming increasingly competitive in a wide range of sports, including cricket, Volleyball and Football, on top of our three major sports, Hockey, Netball and Swimming. We are incredibly proud to have both Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh, GB Olympic Hockey champions, as our School Sport Ambassadors, as well as a recently expanded sports department to include specialisms in tennis, athletics, gymnastics, golf, squash, dance and off-site horse-riding and sailing. Weekly fixtures add a strongly competitive edge at all levels, and House matches enable every girl to enjoy taking part.

Roedean - sport

A star outside the classroom is often an A* within it, and we know that if you are happy in your environment, you will be successful in a variety of different spheres of school life. Therefore we offer a wide range of co-curricular activities at Roedean to ensure that each girl is challenged and stimulated in her free time, allowing every girl to discover her talents and passions. Technical Theatre, Sign Language, Farm club and Formula 24 Electric Car are just a few of the 50 different activities available to girls every week.

Weekly boarding

Weekly boarding is popular with families who live in London, Sussex and Surrey, and is an opportunity for girls to make the most of the opportunities and facilities at Roedean, all in one place and in a safe environment, whilst returning home to friends and family at the weekends. Weekly Boarders from London are chaperoned on the short train journey between Brighton and London Victoria (just 53 minutes) by a member of staff on Friday and Sunday evenings.

Scholarships and Early Entrance

Scholarships are central to Roedean’s ethos, and all girls are encouraged to strive to realise their potential. We offer a range of scholarships to new entrants to the school in Years 7, 9 & 12, including Academic and subject specialism scholarships in Art, Dance, Drama and Sport worth a fee reduction of between 10 – 40%, as well as Brighthelm Awards for Years 7 & 12 for local girls currently in the state sector which are a combination of both Academic scholarship and means-tested funding.

We are also pleased to offer the Early Entrance Programme for 11+ and 13+ entry. This entry route to Roedean is ideal for applicants for whom Roedean is their first choice and is designed to fast-track certainty of a place, whilst still enabling prospective pupils to take part in our programme of inspiring and challenging activity days.
